In negotiation there are really only three outcomes:

 

                                                            Win / Win

 

                                                            Lose / Lose

 

                                                            Win / Lose

 

Win / win is highly desirable, everyone leaves the table happy. Lose / lose is pretty good too because both parties feel that they have made major concessions although potentially bad feelings may remain

 

Win / lose is not a good outcome because one party feels ripped off

 

Binding written agreements are an important part of negotiations and sometimes win / win is impossible but let's always aim for that because a residual bad taste is never a good idea
